The second shooter in the 2008 murder at a Sikh Temple is South Sacramento was sentenced to life yesterday.
On June 17, 2015, a jury convicted Amandeep Dhami of second-degree murder and attempted murder with firearm use enhancements. That murder occurred on August 31, 2008, during a large festival at the Sikh Temple located on Bradshaw Road. The event was comprised of several sporting competitions such as cricket, field hockey, basketball, soccer and track and field. The event drew hundreds of people from around Northern California.
Shortly before 1:30 p.m., Gurpreet Gosal and Amandeep Dhami pulled up to the event in a black Lincoln Navigator. They exited the vehicle and walked to the area where the victims were watching the sporting events. An argument ensued and Gosal and Dhami pulled out handguns and fired at the group. Parmjit (Poma) Singh was struck in the abdomen and died from the gunshot wound. Sahib Jeet Singh was also struck by a bullet and was hospitalized.
After firing the gunshots, Dhami and Gosal fled on foot. Gosal ran into the fields surrounding the event, firing shots behind him as the crowd from the Temple chased him. They ultimately captured him and held him until law enforcement arrived. Gosal was convicted of murder in 2013 and is currently serving a 25 to life sentence in state prison.
Dhami was able to escape the crowd, and remained at large for six years. He was ultimately located in India, and was arrested there in 2014 as the result of cooperation between the FBI and Indian authorities.
