Elk Grove Store Employee Struck by Alleged Shoplifter

A retail loss prevention employee was struck in the head yesterday by an alleged shoplifter in Elk Grove.

Early Wednesday afternoon 47-year old David Kent Barefield of Sacramento was observed leaving the Winco grocery store on Sheldon Road without paying for the merchandise in his possession. As Barefield left the store, he was approached by a loss prevention employee and pulled away, grabbed a six pack of beverages and struck the employee in the head.

After a brief struggle, the store employee was able to detain Barefield until Elk Grove Police officers arrived. Barefield was arrested and booked into the county jail where he is being held on a $115,000 bail.
