Smack That! Elk Grove Police Use Bean Bags to Subdue Suspect

Elk Grove Police ended a stand-off early yesterday afternoon by using bean bags to subdue a suspect.

According to police reports, officers developed information that a suspect with active arrest warrants was located at a residence on the 5100 block of Efthemia Way. As officers were prepared to contact 66-year old Phillip Scherr, he reportedly fled his backyard and was found nearby.

After not complying with orders to lay on the ground, Scherr ignored the instructions and began approaching officers while moving his hands towards his front waistband. Officers deployed less than lethal force (bean bag shotgun) three times.

Scherr eventually complied and was taken into custody. After being medically cleared at an area hospital, Sacramento Police Department took the suspect into custody and later taken to the county jail where he remains on a $151,000 bail.
