The jury also found true the allegation that Sofronski Brookins personally inflicted great bodily injury and that he had a prior conviction for domestic violence.
On August 17, 2012, Brookins became angry with the victim. He boiled a pot of water and held her against the wall while he poured it over her head, causing second-degree burns over seventeen percent of her body and significant permanent scaring.
Deputy District Attorney Laura Froome states, “This verdict would not have been possible without the bravery and courage of the victim and her daughter.”
Brookins faces a maximum sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole. Sentencing is set for May 30, 2014 in Department 18 in front of the Honorable Cheryl Chun Meegan.
