Suspect Arrested for New Year's Day Homicide in Rancho Cordova

Demetrius Shaffer
Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives have arrested thirty-two year-old Demetrius SHAFFER for the homicide of Rajeet Singh on New Year’s Day in Rancho Cordova. SHAFFER was arrested at the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he was already in custody on unrelated charges. SHAFFER is charged with one count of murder, and one count of penetration with a foreign object.

On January 1, 2011, Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies and Rancho Cordova police officers responded to the 2800 block of Mills Park Drive in Rancho Cordova. A resident of the area discovered an adult female, later identified as Rajeet Singh, lying partially nude near the light rail tracks at Mills Park Drive and Folsom Boulevard. Singh was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office later determined that she had died as a result of being strangled.

Detectives were able to link SHAFFER to the murder of Singh, based on DNA evidence that was recovered from the scene. SHAFFER is scheduled to be arraigned in Sacramento County Superior Court later this week.
