District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that Joe McCoy was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Lloyd Connelly to 25 years to life in prison. McCoy was convicted by a jury of torture and corporal injury to a cohabitant causing great bodily injury, namely paralysis and sexual assault.
On the evening of September 15, 2009, McCoy repeatedly assaulted his live-in girlfriend. At one point, he pinned the victim to the ground and flipped her legs over her head, breaking her neck. He then sexually assaulted her. The victim was left a quadriplegic.
Deputy District Attorney Ruanne Dozier states, “Today’s sentence is justice served for a sadistic abuser who has been victimizing women for more than 10 years. Thanks to a district attorney victim advocate, the victim in this case received vital support and encouragement after this vicious attack.”
